Haiku

Haiku

Haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poetry where a three line poem is written. The poem needs to meet some requirements to be a haiku. The poem must have three “kireji” or phrases one in each line, 17 “on” (syllables) with a pattern of 5 7 5, and a seasonal reference or “kigo”. The three line poems that do not strictly follow these rules are called “senryu”.

This form of poetry though started traditionally in Japan in Japanese language. It spread all over the world and now it is written in many languages. Even the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore praised Haiku and other three line poems of Japan in his travelogue ‘Japan Jatra’.

In modern times, ‘Haiku’s are no longer written only for nature and not always contain a seasonal reference. Today the scope of Haiku has increased due to it’s growing writer and reader base in different parts of the world and the use of different elements from different languages in the same haiku to express different emotions using images.

Dreaming life again
Of mountains lot far away
Wearing clothes in green.
